The Miami Student Magazine is a student-led, written, and designed magazine that puts out an issue twice a year. Passing Judgement was written by student Elisa Rosenthal, and I was asked to design the layout for the 17th issue of the magazine. This two-spread layout embodies the anxiety of being watched and judged, felt by the narrator as she lives with an invisible disability.

Process
Finding inspiration for this design was difficult as my writer had not finished her piece. I drew visual elements from more of the emotional feeling of being watched. I represented this with the repeating eye motif, an eerie blurryness to the figures, a dim and emotional color palette, shaky lines, and a paper motif to represent being displayed for critique.
Designing this issue, I was a part of a larger layout team. We had two meetings, the first was to get to know all of the articles so that we could ideate together on the potential design directions. We chose our favorites and created mood boards featuring imagery, typography, hierarchy, and color inspiration. We met again to look over our boards and first drafts, giving each other technical feedback, looking for opportunities, problem-solving, and drawing inspiration from each other.
