GRAPHIC – RUNWAY COLLECTION

GRAPHIC

A reflection of urban movement in typography, graphics, layers of development, systems of grids, and the rough sketches behind the development of them all. Combining graphic design and fashion design, this collection uses grids, layers, type, and custom prints. This collection is a testament to the growth of artistry and to how your experiences, passions, and dedication follow you through your journey.

I showcased this six-look collection as a designer at Miami University Fashion and Design’s 20th Annual Fashion Show. The show featured 20 collections with 23 student designers and 93 student models. Nearly 2,000 seats were sold, with more viewers streaming the live show.

CONCEPT AND MOOD BOARD

The urban theme of this collection was inspired by a piece I made in 2022 titled Cities Smell. The imagery was inspired by all of the cities I had traveled to for dance competitions when I was younger. I had been to Phenox, Montreal, and London; the environment I observed was layered with evidence of progression. The oddest things caught my attention: how power lines intersect, an off-putting door, a steep staircase, cracked pavement, and street lights that attract people just as well as moths.

I embraced the imperfection of the sketch, having no plans for what this piece would turn into, and jumping around the page with new ideas to visualize. This layering of lines and weight inspired the textures and fabrics of my collection.

My love for typography and signage inspired the color choice and use of prints in my collection. Bright red signs steal your attention as you speed by, and language becomes a blur.

THE COLLECTION

Look 1 – Movement

  • Halter Mock Neck Tank
    • Double-lined, polyester four-way stretch, soft lining, and structured outer layer. Asymmetrical gathers, invisible seams, snap closure, and a keyhole back. 
  • Barrel Pant
    • Sicilian polyester stretch twill. Reverse yoke, shaped pockets, rivets, and black top stitching. 
    • Custom heat transfer print featuring I Remember by The Happy Fits. 
  • Cross Body Bag
    • Repurposed black cotton denim. Adjustable D-ring straps and hardware closures. 

LOOK 2 – SOUL DREAM

  • Dress
    • Strapless A-line dress draped to be figure-flattering. Sheer, loose overlay attached at the neckline. Features a custom-drawn and printed design. Sheer, flowing sleeves attached to the front and back with ribbons for embellishment. 
  • Scarf
    • Polyester voile, 120 inches long with a baby hem. Featuring lyrics from Little Words by The Happy Fits.

LOOK 3 – POWER LINE

  • Top
    • Inspired by the crossing of powerlines. Re-structured baggy mock boat neck fit. Color blocking in grid-like panels and grid fabric manipulation. 
  • Jean Shorts
    • Hemp and cotton denim, re-dyed.  Flared and angular hem. Square pockets with a grid top stitch pattern. Purple top stitching and rivets. 

LOOK 4 – CITY FLOW

  • Top
    • Poly satin underlayer and sheer voile. Strapless with a built-in bra, full drawstring, and ribbon closures in the back. Sheer, loose overlay attached at the neckline. Features a custom-drawn and printed design.  
  • Barrel Pants
    • Grey Sicilian stretch twill and hemp/cotton hand-dyed denim. Built-in belt and D-ring loops. Pleated center section, uniquely shaped pockets, and black top-stitching. 
  • Purse
    • Repurposed denim, fully lined with pockets, built-in D-rings for accessories. 
  • Scarf
    • Original artwork Cities Smell digitally edited into a repeated pattern to custom print on a drapey poly satin. 

LOOK 5 – NEW LEVEL

  • Top
    • Ponte di Roma fabric, hand-stitched ribbed cuffs, collar, and hem. Ribbon closures. 
  • Pleated Trouser
    • Polyester and linen. Hand-stitched pleats, wrapping from the front to back. Thick waistband with hidden closures. Bucket-style pocket. 
  • Shaw
    • Bouncy, organic cotton canvas fabric. Hand-stitched pleats. 

LOOK 6 – RED LIGHT

  • Vest
    • Cotton and hemp denim, hand-dyed. Inner lining, tie closures, and bias binding made from poly satin. Custom print featuring lyrics from Did I Love You (Like I Promised To) by Flipturn.
  • Purse
    • Repurposed denim with poly satin structured binding. Hand-placed silver studs. 
  • Skirt
    • Poly satin under a mini-skirt. Sheer voile over skirt with hand-cut and burned layers of sheer voile and georgette, split into two panels.
